Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) are advanced air pollution control systems designed to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), and industrial odors generated during manufacturing processes. How RTOs Work
RTO systems use high temperatures—typically between 1,400°F and 1,800°F—to oxidize airborne contaminants and convert them into harmless byproducts such as carbon dioxide and water vapor. The system captures and reuses heat through ceramic media beds, allowing incoming process air to be preheated before entering the combustion chamber. This regenerative heat recovery process significantly improves energy efficiency and reduces natural gas usage compared to other thermal oxidation technologies.
Most RTOs operate using multiple chambers that alternate airflow direction in cycles, ensuring continuous operation and optimal heat transfer. Depending on the application, RTOs can achieve destruction efficiencies greater than 99%.
